Fun Family Game Night Ideas

Growing up, we had both, family game night and family movie night.

Saturday evenings was set aside for family game night. Indoors, we played games like dominoes, checkers,Uno, Go-Fish, Hearts, etc.

"as a single mom, college student and full-time employee, I had to cut back"

As an adult, I tried movie night for a while, instead of game night, but it got to be a little expensive.

As a single mom, college student and full-time employee, I had to cut back. That’s when we started playing board games. Buying games was definitely cheaper than renting movies every weekend. There were no inexpensive options like Netflix back then.

It was less expensive to purchase board games and use them over and over. M's favorite is monopoly. He is pretty good too.

My game of choice was and always will be scrabble. I'm a dare devil. What can I say?

Soon, I realized that game night gave me the chance to spend time with my son after a busy week of work, meetings, school and athletic practice! Plus, my son actually looked forward to the time we spent together.

We alternated games each week. One week we played monopoly and the next week we played scrabble.

When I could afford it, we purchased more games to add to the rotation.

Here are some tips for starting your own family game night...

1. Allow each member to pick their favorite board game (or video game if you like). This creates buy-in from all of the members.

2. Rotate the games each week. Each family member has a week.

3. The person whose game is being played also gets to plan the snack menu

4. Sneak in an educational game for good measure.Don't be afraid to introduce science games and or math games. Flash cards are a good option for elementary school ages.

5. Be sure to pick a night that is less likely to be interrupted by someone’s busy schedule.
