Try these family night idea themes and activities on for size.

They worked for my family and I'm sure they will be a hit with yours too.

1. Family Math Night: You're probably thinking that this will never fly with your kids, but I promise it will. When kids are having fun, they forget that they are also learning. Try a math memory multiplication game. Have kids memorize a specified multiplication set and give the winner a prize, money, or exempt them from a chore for a week! Use flash cards for younger kids. Let them quiz you as well.

2. Family Reading Night: Let the kids select the book of their choice and allow them to read for that night. Make sure you get involved as well. Alternate reading selections from week to week. Pick something fun and light-hearted. Or choose a theme based on the time of year, cultural holiday, or season.

3. Family Literacy Night: Have each person write a funny story and share it with the group on family game night. Have a theme night. Or let the group decide what the story should be about for the next family fun night. The stories don't have to be non-fiction. They can be about anything the writer can imagine.

4. Family History Night: Start a family story book. Share a funny, quirky, or interesting story about family member(s) that your kids might not otherwise know. Collect these stories in an album. Create a family tree together. This will give them a chance to learn about their heritage and the folks in their family tree.

5. Family Movie Night: Draw straws to see who picks the first movie. Let the person who chose the movie, also choose the snacks for the evening. Customize your family night idea to fit your family. If you have a competitive bunch, select games with high stakes. If not, choose games where there are no winners.

Just keep the activity fun and entertaining. The goal is to engage everyone and have a good time. A little learning doesn't hurt either.
