How to Make A Pinata

Have fun making a homemade pinata from scratch!

Wanna Know How to Make A Pinata?

Don't you just love crafts and homemade projects? Not the clean-up part, but the fun part. Creating something from scratch with your hands. And then watching other people enjoy it.

That's what happens with projects like homemade pinatas. Making pinatas the paper mache way are really easy. A bit messy. But easy.

I promise one thing, you will have fun learning how to make a pinata with your own two hands.

Who knows, you may not even want to let your guests break it open!

What you will need:
  • A balloon to use as the frame (the larger the better)

  • Lots and lots of newspaper (torn into 2 in x 8 in strips)

  • A Recipe for paper mache paste (see below)

  • A few rolls of masking tape

  • String to hang your pinata from

Paper Mache Recipe
I got this paper mache recipe from Familyfun.com:
Combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour and 2 cups cold water in a bowl. Add this mixture to a saucepan of 2 cups boiling water and bring it to a boil again. Remove from the heat and stir in 3 tablespoons of sugar. Let it cool. It will thicken as it cools.

Making Your Homemade Pinata:

  • Cover your work area thoroughly to save yourself from a very messy clean-up job.

  • Blow up the balloon and set it in a bowl or cup of some kind for stability (so that it can stand on it's own).

  • Now you're going cover the entire balloon with the first layer of newspaper strips. You should try to leave a small hole in the top so that you can later pop the balloon and pull it out through the hole.

  • Dip the newspaper strips into the paste one at a time and smooth them onto the balloon. Allow this layer to dry.
Alternative: Use Brushes instead. Brush paste onto the balloon and then stick the newspaper strips onto the balloon. Lastly, paint overthe strips with more paste in order to smooth them out.

  • Add one or two more layers allowing each layer to dry thoroughly before continuing to the next. (too many layers will make the pinata too strong to break)

  • Once the paper mache is dry (hardened), use a sharp pin to pop the balloon and pull as much of it out as you can.

  • Poke a couple of holes around the top for later so that you can run string through them to hang your new pinata.

  • Decorate the pinata however you choose. You can paint (or spray paint) it, cover it with crepe paper, hang streamers on it, whatever you like!

  • A Bright Idea: If you have a theme, you may want to buy a foil balloon in that theme, cut it out, and glue it to your own pinata.
