Tug of War Rules

How to play the tug of war game

Tug of War Rules

We used to play tug of war or the "tug rope game", at all of our family reunions and camp events.

It's a fun way to encourage teamwork, break the ice, or just have some good old fashioned fun.

How to play Divide the players into two teams. Teams of five or more works well. Mix the teams up in a fun way.

You could put one family group (ie. 1st cousins vs. 2nd cousins) against another. Or guys against girls. Put all of the first born girls on one team and all of the first born guys on another.

Tie a handkerchief in the center of the rope. Draw a line in the dirt or make some other type of mark on the ground that will serve as the center marker. Have a designated person stand in the middle near the marker line to determine when the marker is crossed. You also may want to give this person a whistle to blow at the time the line is crossed.

Each team gets on either side of the rope and tries to pull the other team across the ground marker. When any body part of the other team crosses the line, the game is over and the opposite team wins.

The team that gets pulled over the ground marker loses.
